SUMMARY:Art - Abbie Sewall & Stefan Pastuhov
DESCRIPTION:Stefan:\n \nStefan Pastuhov grew up in Harvard\, Massachusetts. He graduated from the American School in Paris and returned to the U.S.\, where he received his BFA from Tufts University and the Boston School Museum School of Fine Arts. Stefan moved to Maine in 1984.  Stefan is a plein-air painter who loves the outdoors and paints on location year-round. It’s the beauty of changing light and seasons that appeal to him. He counts among his strongest influences: John Singer Sargent\, Emile Gruppe\, Edgar Paine\, and Aldro T. Hibbard. He is a founding member of the plein-air painters of New England. His work has been featured on the covers of the L. L. Bean catalogues.  Images of Stefan’s paintings can be found on his website pastuhov.com\, and can be contacted at pastuhov@tidewater.net. Stefan’s art is shown at Blue Hill Bay Gallery in Blue Hill\, Maine\, Bay View Gallery in Brunswick\, Maine\, The Vermont Artisan Gallery in Brattleboro\, Vermont and The Berkeley Gallery in Warrenton\,Virginia. \n  \nAbbie:\nL I M I N A L S P A C E S \nI am drawn to visual narratives that enhance our perceived reality by\ncreating a space – or a pause – in the viewer’s awareness of time and\nexperience. In Buddhism\, “pausing” or “the pause” refers to a deliberate\nmoment of stillness and mindful presence.\nThe images in this show are from a body of work I call “Liminal Spaces\,”\nreferring to a still-time place of contemplation between past and present; or\nfrom a position that occupies both sides of a boundary or threshold. This is\nthe place I have occupied since age fifteen when the life and photographs\nof my great-great grandmother\, Emma D. Sewall (1836-1919)\, presented a\nthreshold between her past and the life I have chosen to live. If you believe\nin reincarnation\, ‘I am Emma in blue jeans.’ \nSome of these works stand alone as one image\, while others are intuitively\nstacked one top of the other. Either way\, they must carry me to an interior\nplace of harmony\, a momentary pause between here and there. \nIf my narrative images can briefly play a part in raising the viewer’s energy\nfrequency to connect more deeply with Beauty\, environment and the\nexperience of love\, I will have succeeded. \n  \nArt Opening & Celebration\nSunday August 3rd\n4:00 pm \nStefan: \n \n  \n  \n\nAbbie:

SUMMARY:Speaker - Anne Pfitzer: A Small Pointer’s Take on Foreign Assistance and the US Role in the World
DESCRIPTION:After pursuing a degree in public health\, Anne has worked in development for over 30 years\, with 90% of her work funded by USAID (and was abruptly terminated this year). She will tell stories of how she came to do this work\, some professional experiences\, and debunk some of the narratives circulating. She will also provide her perspectives on what is emerging in terms of the impacts of the defunding of foreign assistance programs. The idea is to have a conversation with the bulk of the time in discussion about how assistance programs came to be characterized as soft power in geo-politics.

SUMMARY:Art - Elizabeth Wood
DESCRIPTION:“My works from the last four years demonstrate my artistic development through college\, and are an expression of a love for the mundane\, inane\, and whimsical. They exude humor\, and are imbued with a directness that allows for no question of my focus\, even if deeper intentions remain obscure. Through it all is a love for the act of creation.” \nArt Opening & Celebration\nSunday July 27th\n4:00 pm

SUMMARY:Speaker - Cal Inguanti & Keith Curley\, Trout Unlimited
DESCRIPTION:Join Keith Curley\, Trout Unlimited’s Vice President of Eastern Conservation\, for a behind-the-scenes look at TU’s decades-long fight to restore Maine’s Kennebec River. \nFrom the landmark removal of the Edwards Dam in 1999 to the current battle over four remaining dams blocking endangered Atlantic salmon\, Keith will share how local volunteers\, community allies\, and science-based advocacy helped revive one of New England’s most iconic rivers.  This is a story of hard-won progress — and today is a critical moment for the Kennebec’s future. \n

SUMMARY:Juliet Kirkham Art Show Opening
DESCRIPTION:I am a self-taught artist\, working out of my studio in Berkeley\, California. I have always been drawn to watercolor\, but learning to use this mercurial and mischievous medium is a recent exploration. I am constantly thrilled with the interplay between water and pigment and the individualistic and often erratic behaviors of watercolor paints. For me\, painting is a practice not a perfect – a constant way to witness and delight in the everyday world around us. \nArtist work is exhibited throughout the week and is available for purchase during that time. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lasell Family Art Show Opening
DESCRIPTION:According to a history written about the Whitin machine works\, the Lasells of Whitinsville were “warm-hearted\, sensitive\, artistic people\, socially gracious and fond of good living.” Although the first two of these characteristics were not ideal qualifications for running a machinery business in central Massachusetts\, that is what they did\, until textile work went south in the middle of the last century. \nThey supported promising artists and they appreciated art in their own family. Various members of the family have had the opportunity to be “socially gracious” and “fond of good living” here in Small Point for over a century of summers. \nThe “artistic” trait is a one that happily persists. It was encouraged by pictures that hung on the walls of Happy’s house when the current residents were kids. Some of that house art and some by living family members are in this show. \n  \nArtist work is exhibited throughout the week and is available for purchase during that time.

SUMMARY:Hodie Hazard and Ned Motley Art Show Opening
DESCRIPTION:Artist work is exhibited throughout the week and is available for purchase during that time. \n  \n \nHODIE HAZARD\n \nIt’s been the highest pleasure of my artistic life to start working with Ned\, learning to throw\, hand build and glaze pots.  While we’re each doing our own pieces\, we’re also experimenting with co-creation – my glazing on his beautiful forms.  I highly recommend a brand new journey in your 70’s. \n  \n  \n \nNED MOTLEY  \nI’m inspired and influenced so much by the images and patterns of the natural world that surrounds me. And to me\, there is no other abstract artist who compares to our Mother Nature. I love the control and predictably of throwing symmetrical pottery on a wheel\, and then I get to be more spontaneous and\nchaotic in my glazing technique. Sort of a reflection of what’s really going on inside my brain! \n  \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Speaker - Tess Chakkalakal: Introducing Charles Chesnutt
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Tess Chakkalakal offers a fresh look at the life and work of Charles Waddell Chesnutt\, the first professional Black American writer. His first novel was adapted for the screen by Oscar Micheaux. His stories of post-Civil War America are as relevant today as when they first appeared in the 1880s. Uncovering new sources\, Chakkalakal evokes Chesnutt’s rise as a schoolteacher in the segregated South to joining the ranks of American realist authors. Working as a shorthand reporter\, lawyer\, and author\, Chesnutt published six books and became known for fiction that has become essential to the development of the American short story form. \nTess teaches African American and American literature at Bowdoin College. Her writing has appeared in The New England Quarterly\, J19\, American Literary History\, and many others. She is the author of Novel Bondage: Slavery\, Marriage\, and Freedom in Nineteenth-Century America (Illinois University Press\, 2011) and coeditor of Jim Crow\, Literature\, and the Legacy of Sutton E. Griggs (University of Georgia Press\, 2013) and Imperium in Imperio: A Critical Edition (West Virginia University Press\, 2022). She lives in Brunswick\, Maine.

SUMMARY:Katie Blair St John Art Show Opening
DESCRIPTION:Katie Blair St John has spent every summer of her life in Small Point\, breathing in the colors\, composition and atmosphere. \nA great admirer of art from Italian Renaissance to Contemporary\, she foolishly was intimidated from taking painting classes because other students appeared to already know what they were doing. \nLocal painters\, Frank and Phyllis Mason and Mary Ester MacFadyen became her inspiration. In the 50’s and 60’s she’d watch them pick up an old\, wooden shingle and dash off a quick landscape while supposedly watching her gang of cousins swim or climb the rocks. The children felt very special if asked to sit for a portrait. These much loved paintings can be found all over Small Point. \nDuring the winter Katie Blair lives on the Great Marsh in Ipswich\, Massachusetts where there’s a thriving art scene. On her 60th birthday\, almost done with the rigors of work and raising 4 boys\, she began to paint\, first by herself then with artist friends. Now\, 10 years later\, she still paints two days a week Plein Air or from photographs in a studio with these artist mentors. She works in oil and pastel. \nContact info: katieblairstjohn@gmail.com \nArtist work is exhibited throughout the week and is available for purchase during that time. \n   \n  \n \n
