Her work has been described as “moving” and as being “a true master of color”.   With over 50 years of painting experience she brings a breadth of knowledge of art history\, exquisite skill for color and a deep understanding of what makes paint come to life. She earned her BFA with honors in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)\, her MAT in lithography from RISD\, and an MFA in Visual Arts from Vermont College. She has served on the Faculty of Goddard College\, and has taught numerous workshops and courses since 1985. \nSince 1998 Barr has devoted herself to painting full-time\, and actively participates in painting and community building programs. She believes learning is a never ending process and continues her own development through research\, travel\, and regular visits to artists’ studios\, galleries and museums. \n‘My paintings are fresh in color\, light in tone\, and reflect an immediate response to the subjects being painted with a sense of harmony.  I paint quickly and in response to my environment as it constantly changes.  Through this experience working in plein air or from models\, my understanding of the unique aspects of the direction of light\, atmosphere\, and color is perpetually developing. \n“I prefer the time of day when colors are strongest – early and late in the day or when overcast and drizzly. I have always been drawn to watercolor\, but learning to use this mercurial and mischievous medium is a recent exploration. I am constantly thrilled with the interplay between water and pigment and the individualistic and often erratic behaviors of watercolor paints. For me\, painting is a practice not a perfect – a constant way to witness and delight in the everyday world around us. \nThe content of this show was inspired by recent visits to the majestic Northern California coast. This rugged\, rocky coastline is home to beautiful wild flowers that bloom in the spring and early summer despite challenging conditions. They are simple and stubborn and worthy of study. Over the years I’ve decorated the places I’ve lived in with many curtains\, bedspreads and pillow covers. It wasn’t until I retired in 2000 that I bought a new computerized sewing machine with an embroidery arm and started taking classes at the local sewing store. From there I made everything from small quilts\, wallets and aprons to zipper pouches\, tote bags and embroidered purses. At Christmas I make most of my gifts on my sewing machine much to the delight of my family and especially my 10-year-old twin great nieces. \nAfter our sewing store closed and with no more inspiration from their classes\, I’ve focused more on tote bags and purses. Although I mostly follow patterns\, I’ve had fun adjusting those patterns by adding zippers and pockets to basic patterns as well as changing sizes to fit a cut out t-shirt front that I use as a focal point. The best part is in choosing the fabrics and colors to make my creations. The challenge is following complicated patterns and adding zippers\, closures and embroidery. \nI sew for fun! It keeps my mind sharp as I follow complicated directions. My perfectionist nature makes for much tearing out when I make mistakes and they are apparent. Despite the hours it takes to make these projects\, the final outcome is what gives me a feeling of satisfaction and pleasure. \nPlease take my creations down or pick them up and look inside to see what I’ve done. In 2012  I transformed a garden shed on my rural property into a cramped but very cozy and practical studio. I’ve been making functional pottery since high school but started pursuing it as a career in 2003. In ‘05 I graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a BFA\, specializing in Craft. I’m inspired and influenced so much by the images and patterns of the natural world that surrounds me. And to me\, there is no other abstract artist who compares to our Mother Nature. I love the control and predictably of throwing symmetrical pottery on a wheel\, and then I get to be more spontaneous and chaotic in my glazing technique. Sort of a reflection of what’s really going on inside my brain! \nNedware Pottery has taken so many forms over the years\, yet it has consistently remained easily identifiable and very functional. I am mostly drawn to function and purpose in my work partly because I find it very grounding when much of my life feels fluid and unpredictable\, but also—I will confess—it can be so challenging and intimidating to venture out into the unknown of form for the sake of form rather than what it can do or be. I’ve had this good thing going and I like it’s predictability and popularity. I do aspire toward exploration and pushing the edge. I also like whimsy and silliness! Yet so often before a show I feel “under the gun” and find the familiar shapes and glazes an easy groove to slide back into. I write this almost 2 months before the actual show date. In the 50’s and 60’s she’d watch them pick up an old\, wooden shingle and dash off a quick landscape while supposedly watching her gang of cousins swim or climb the rocks. The children felt very special if asked to sit for a portrait. These much loved paintings can be found all over Small Point. \nDuring the winter Katie Blair lives on the Great Marsh in Ipswich\, Massachusetts where there’s a thriving art scene. On her 60th birthday\, almost done with the rigors of work and raising 4 boys\, she began to paint\, first by herself then with artist friends. Now\, 10 years later\, she still paints two days a week Plein Air or from photographs in a studio with these artist mentors. This tradition stretches from medieval illuminated manuscripts and concrete poetry\, to Paul Klee and Bauhaus typography; from Jasper Johns\, Jenny Holzer\, Lawrence Weiner\, and Ed Ruscha to graffiti writers like Retna. In Pages\, Feinstein uses words as pictures. The words are largely drawn from the artist’s own writings—poems from the early 2000s. The layered texts are rendered intentionally illegible\, creating rich tumbled surfaces that ask to be decoded. \nARTIST BIO:\nAn East-coaster transplanted to the West\, Lea Feinstein is an artist\, writer\, and teacher who has worked in a variety of media from bronze casting to performance art. She has taught at RISD\, MICA\, CCA\, Academy of Art SF\, George Washington and Georgetown University. She has written about art for national and local magazines\, and penned a walking tour of Munch’s Oslo for a travel guide.
