SUMMARY:Tim Mitchell Art Show Opening
DESCRIPTION:Tim Mitchell will kick off the Club’s season of weekly community art shows with a series of limited-edition photographs. Tim is generously donating all profits back to the Small Point Club. \nArt Show June 30 – July 7 \nContrary to what his parents have told people for years\, Tim is not a professional photographer. \nHe is passionate about taking pictures and has been shooting since an early age. Tim studied photography at The Maine Photographic Workshops in the late ’70s and moved on to NYC where he worked in the B&W labs at Time\, Inc. He was fortunate to meet numerous professional photographers for whom he started assisting and traveling the globe. \nAssisting segued into location scouting and from there he became a producer for advertising photographers – traveling further and more often. After reaching a peak of 200 days a year on the road\, Tim decided he’d had enough and started representing commercial European photographers and CGI/3D studios within the USA. \nNearing 45 years in the business\, Tim is looking forward to retiring in the next “couple of years” and sharing more time with his wife Liz and their English Cocker pups. \n

DESCRIPTION:Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment – Paris 1785 follows Jefferson’s life during his five years in France (August 1784 to September 1789)\, and where Jefferson became an object of interest for two circles of women. The first were aristocrats and intellectuals who circulated in the salons of Paris. The second included mothers and their friends who Jefferson met while tending his parental duties. \nThe women in these two circles all romanced the self-styled “savage from the mountains of America.” \nMr. Thompson will focus his talk on four specific women\, Maria Cosway\, née Hatfield (1760–1838)\, Marie-Louise Nicole Elisabeth de la Rochefoucauld\, Duchess d’Anville (1716–1797)\, Adrienne Catherine de Noailles\, Comtesse de Tessé (1741–1813)\, and Marguerite-Victoire\, Madame de Corny (1747–1832). \nOnce we understand Jefferson’s Parisian romances\, we can understand the relationships Jefferson had with women when he returned to Virginia late in 1789. \nAbout the Speaker/Author \nJames Thompson grew up in Wilmington\, Delaware where he studied art at the Delaware Art Museum. He studied Philosophy as an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville\, Virginia. As a graduate student\, he lived across the Rivanna River from Monticello on the Shadwell farm of Jefferson’s eldest daughter\, Martha Jefferson Randolph. During his four years there\, he commenced what has been a continuing investigation into “the philosophy” of Thomas Jefferson. \nHe cultivated his interest in the ‘History of Ideas’ teaching courses in Philosophy\, Religion\, and Ethics and in Western Civilization at Strayer University. He has written seven books: The Birth of Virginia’s Aristocracy (2010)\, The Dubious Achievement of the First Continental Congress (2011)\, Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment – Paris 1785 (2014)\, Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment – Background Notes (2014)\, George Washington’s Mulabo Man – Who was Billy Lee? (2016)\, and The First Revolutions in the Minds of the People (2023). \nThompson has delivered talks at the Naval Academy\, the Virginia Historical Society\, Stratford Hall\, and Wilton House in Richmond. He has presented lecture series for the continuing education programs at the University of Virginia\, the College of William & Mary\, George Mason University\, and the University of Delaware.

DESCRIPTION:“How to Tame a Fox: small works by Lea Feinstein”\nA life-long artist and seasonal Mainer with deep roots in Small Point\, Lea Feinstein (Vaughan) has taught art and design at RISD\, MICA\, Georgetown University\, George Washington University\, and other schools. \nShe has written about art in reviews\, long form articles\, and catalog essays for national print and digital publications (ArtNews\, Art Ltd\, SFWeekly\, Artpractical.com\, DailyServing.com\, and others). \nHer recent (2022-23) studio practice draws on texts from favorite writers\, using the overlapping abstract forms of words and letters to create layered tapestry-like paintings. The current exhibition features small works from this series\, and related pieces in a variety of mediums—meditative abstract paintings\, quiet collages\, and humorous assemblages. \nLea’s art will be exhibited at the Club August 20-August 27.

DESCRIPTION:Ron will read excerpts from his book “Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs and Hermit Bill: Memories of a Maine Wildlife Biologist” published this spring. Copies will be on hand for purchase. \nRon’s idyllic Maine childhood on his grandparents’ dairy farm in the 1950s and ’60s inspired him to become a Maine wildlife biologist. This is a nostalgic look of a bygone era of a simple\, self-sufficient life without electricity or indoor plumbing. The book also provides a window into an era of the vast\, largely unbroken fabled Maine woods—and the hermits\, abundant wildlife\, and colorful characters that inhabited it— before unsustainable timber harvests and thousands of miles of logging roads reduced our forests to large clearcuts so vast\, he often sarcastically joked that they could be seen from the moon.

DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT FOR THE DINNER PORTION.\nCocktails\, auction participation\, and dancing are still a fun part of the evening. \n  \nJoin your friends and fellow Club members for a celebration of another year of the Club’s founding – 126 years! \nIn the weeks prior to the dinner\, an online auction is planned. “Closets\, Collections\, and Creative Experiences” is inspired by Louise Hoffman’s retrieval from her closet\, a couple of years ago\, of two original Bodwell Spinney blueprints. She generously donated these to that year’s fundraiser auction\, which were bid on passionately\, to the great excitement of the crowd. \nThis put in mind the idea that we all have cherished items that we don’t have a use or place for any longer – either languishing in your closet or elsewhere. Folks may have collections family members aren’t interested in (Waterford crystal\, Aunt Marie’s depression glass?). Contributing to the auction could do two things: find a welcome new home and raise funds for the Club! \nDonations of creative experiences (fishing lessons\, painting lessons\, sailing in Casco Bay\, a get-away opportunity…) are welcome donations as well. \nOur fundraisers are integral to the ongoing maintenance of the Club not covered by the Preservation Fund. New appliances\, sinks\, painting\, carpeting… the list is endless and ongoing. Members’ dues go toward operating expenses\, thus the participation of our members in our fundraising efforts is necessary and greatly appreciated! \nInstructions for uploading your donations to the auction website will be forthcoming. In the meantime please search your spaces and capabilities for contribution ideas.

SUMMARY:Speakers - Sandra Horowitz and Bobby Dealy - Saving Monarch Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Bobby Dealy and Sandra Horowitz were in California and on a whim\, visited the butterfly reserve at Pismo beach\, since they were driving up the coast. It was a disappointment\, but they decided to go up to Monterey Bay where they brag they are Monarch City. When finally finding the sanctuary they were told they were looking at an extinction event. The town commercializes monarchs but does not support the sanctuary\, where they winter. This inspired Sandra’s two trips to Mexico and research to further understand the plight of these amazing creatures. It involves murder and poachers related to the cartels. SUMMARY:Speaker - Jill Pearlman “The Spies Who Came into the Modernist Fold:  The Covert Life in London’s Lawn Road Flats”
DESCRIPTION:Bowdoin Professor of Environmental Studies Jill Pearlman casts new light on a 1934 modernist landmark in London designed by architect Wells Coates for clients Jack and Molly Pritchard. With the gradual opening of intelligence archives in Britain and Russia since the fall of the Iron Curtain\, it has come to light that between 1935 and 1942\, four prominent Soviet spies made their home in the building. Her talk explores the reasons why the spies chose the Flats as their place of residence. Based on extensive research in both intelligence and architectural archives\, she will show that the design\, the scheme for modern living\, and the setting of the Lawn Road Flats offered the Soviet agents a residence that allowed them to carry out their espionage work.
