SUMMARY:Speaker - Tess Chakkalakal: Introducing Charles Chesnutt
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Tess Chakkalakal offers a fresh look at the life and work of Charles Waddell Chesnutt\, the first professional Black American writer. His first novel was adapted for the screen by Oscar Micheaux. His stories of post-Civil War America are as relevant today as when they first appeared in the 1880s. Uncovering new sources\, Chakkalakal evokes Chesnutt’s rise as a schoolteacher in the segregated South to joining the ranks of American realist authors. Working as a shorthand reporter\, lawyer\, and author\, Chesnutt published six books and became known for fiction that has become essential to the development of the American short story form. \nTess teaches African American and American literature at Bowdoin College. Her writing has appeared in The New England Quarterly\, J19\, American Literary History\, and many others. She is the author of Novel Bondage: Slavery\, Marriage\, and Freedom in Nineteenth-Century America (Illinois University Press\, 2011) and coeditor of Jim Crow\, Literature\, and the Legacy of Sutton E. Griggs (University of Georgia Press\, 2013) and Imperium in Imperio: A Critical Edition (West Virginia University Press\, 2022). She lives in Brunswick\, Maine.

SUMMARY:Speaker - John Herrick
DESCRIPTION:Long Time Passing\n\nThe War in Viet Nam may seem to have been a long time ago\, but in many ways it is still with us. This slideshow is the story of long time Small Pointer\, John Herrick\, one draftee who spent a year in the infantry during the height of the war and how he has been living with that experience in the years since then. \n\n\nJohn Herrick was born and raised in Englewood\, New Jersey. His local draft board was in Hackensack. He started college at Union College in Schenectady\, New York\, but in his second year\, feeling uninspired\, he dropped out to work in New York City for a while. Big mistake. Dropping out changed his draft status and he was drafted in the spring of 1966. He served as an infantry soldier in Viet Nam in the First Cavalry Division from March 1967 to March 1968. The year 1968 was a big year for John: he survived the Tet Offensive; he got out of Viet Nam and off active duty in March; he met his future wife soon after getting home; he returned to Union College and was inspired this time; he was married in December 1968; and he transferred to Boston University. John is still married to Libby 55 years later and they have 2 sons who are both married and they provide several grandchildren for them to dote upon. While in Viet Nam John developed deep misgivings about the war. He has been troubled by the experience ever since he came home. He is a long-time member of Veterans for Peace and has shown his Viet Nam pictures to numerous school and college groups around the country. John had a career as an English teacher and school administrator. He took some time off to start writing his memoir\, and then had a career as a counselor. In addition to his Bachelor’s degree in English\, he also has an MEd. and an MS in clinical counseling. Not a day goes by that he doesn’t think about the experience of combat he endured in Viet Nam.

SUMMARY:Speaker - James C. Thompson "The Women Who Romanced Thomas Jefferson"
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment – Paris 1785 follows Jefferson’s life during his five years in France (August 1784 to September 1789)\, and where Jefferson became an object of interest for two circles of women. The first were aristocrats and intellectuals who circulated in the salons of Paris. The second included mothers and their friends who Jefferson met while tending his parental duties. \nThe women in these two circles all romanced the self-styled “savage from the mountains of America.” \nMr. Thompson will focus his talk on four specific women\, Maria Cosway\, née Hatfield (1760–1838)\, Marie-Louise Nicole Elisabeth de la Rochefoucauld\, Duchess d’Anville (1716–1797)\, Adrienne Catherine de Noailles\, Comtesse de Tessé (1741–1813)\, and Marguerite-Victoire\, Madame de Corny (1747–1832). \nOnce we understand Jefferson’s Parisian romances\, we can understand the relationships Jefferson had with women when he returned to Virginia late in 1789. \nAbout the Speaker/Author \nJames Thompson grew up in Wilmington\, Delaware where he studied art at the Delaware Art Museum. He studied Philosophy as an undergraduate and graduate student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville\, Virginia. As a graduate student\, he lived across the Rivanna River from Monticello on the Shadwell farm of Jefferson’s eldest daughter\, Martha Jefferson Randolph. During his four years there\, he commenced what has been a continuing investigation into “the philosophy” of Thomas Jefferson. \nHe cultivated his interest in the ‘History of Ideas’ teaching courses in Philosophy\, Religion\, and Ethics and in Western Civilization at Strayer University. He has written seven books: The Birth of Virginia’s Aristocracy (2010)\, The Dubious Achievement of the First Continental Congress (2011)\, Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment – Paris 1785 (2014)\, Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment – Background Notes (2014)\, George Washington’s Mulabo Man – Who was Billy Lee? (2016)\, and The First Revolutions in the Minds of the People (2023). \nThompson has delivered talks at the Naval Academy\, the Virginia Historical Society\, Stratford Hall\, and Wilton House in Richmond. He has presented lecture series for the continuing education programs at the University of Virginia\, the College of William & Mary\, George Mason University\, and the University of Delaware.

SUMMARY:Speaker - Ron Joseph “A Maine Son: Memoirs of a Wildlife Biologist”
DESCRIPTION:Ron will read excerpts from his book “Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs and Hermit Bill: Memories of a Maine Wildlife Biologist” published this spring. Copies will be on hand for purchase. \nRon’s idyllic Maine childhood on his grandparents’ dairy farm in the 1950s and ’60s inspired him to become a Maine wildlife biologist. This is a nostalgic look of a bygone era of a simple\, self-sufficient life without electricity or indoor plumbing. The book also provides a window into an era of the vast\, largely unbroken fabled Maine woods—and the hermits\, abundant wildlife\, and colorful characters that inhabited it— before unsustainable timber harvests and thousands of miles of logging roads reduced our forests to large clearcuts so vast\, he often sarcastically joked that they could be seen from the moon.

SUMMARY:Speakers - Sandra Horowitz and Bobby Dealy - Saving Monarch Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Bobby Dealy and Sandra Horowitz were in California and on a whim\, visited the butterfly reserve at Pismo beach\, since they were driving up the coast. It was a disappointment\, but they decided to go up to Monterey Bay where they brag they are Monarch City. When finally finding the sanctuary they were told they were looking at an extinction event. The town commercializes monarchs but does not support the sanctuary\, where they winter. This inspired Sandra’s two trips to Mexico and research to further understand the plight of these amazing creatures. It involves murder and poachers related to the cartels. Everything she explored led her down another path. Sandra thinks it is important to spread the word to save these creatures.

SUMMARY:Speaker - Jill Pearlman “The Spies Who Came into the Modernist Fold: The Covert Life in London’s Lawn Road Flats”
DESCRIPTION:Bowdoin Professor of Environmental Studies Jill Pearlman casts new light on a 1934 modernist landmark in London designed by architect Wells Coates for clients Jack and Molly Pritchard. With the gradual opening of intelligence archives in Britain and Russia since the fall of the Iron Curtain\, it has come to light that between 1935 and 1942\, four prominent Soviet spies made their home in the building. Her talk explores the reasons why the spies chose the Flats as their place of residence. Based on extensive research in both intelligence and architectural archives\, she will show that the design\, the scheme for modern living\, and the setting of the Lawn Road Flats offered the Soviet agents a residence that allowed them to carry out their espionage work.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Ron Joseph
DESCRIPTION:“A Maine Son: Memoirs of a Wildlife Biologist” \nRon will read select passages from his newly published book about the role Ron’s idyllic Maine childhood on his grandparents’ dairy farm in the 1950s and ’60s inspired him to become a Maine wildlife biologist. It’s a nostalgic look of a bygone era of a simple\, self-sufficient life without electricity or indoor plumbing.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Joseph Hall
DESCRIPTION:“What If the Morse Mountain Was Not at the End of a Road but at the Intersection of Two?” \nBates College Associate Professor of History and Environmental Department Chair Joe Hall\, will speak to the contrast between the Native view and use of the land and marshes surrounding Morse Mountain with that of the European settlers. The Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area is near the end of a long access road which is itself at the end of the state highway that winds from Bath through Phippsburg. But what if we thought of this place as at the intersection of this overland roads and a much older portage that connects Atkins Bay to Small Point Harbor by way of the Morse and Sprague Rivers? Considering this question raises new questions about the continuing presence of Wabanakis in Phippsburg and other parts of Midcoast Maine.

SUMMARY:Speaker : Jill Pearlman
DESCRIPTION:This event cancelled due to covid concerns. The Club wishes everyone good health \n\n“The Spies Who Came into the Modernist Fold: The Covert Life in London’s Lawn Road Flats” \nBowdoin Professor of Environmental Studies Jill Pearlman casts new light on a 1934 modernist landmark in London designed by architect Wells Coates for clients Jack and Molly Pritchard.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series #1: Bonnie Docherty
DESCRIPTION:“Bombs Away: Humanitarian Disarmament and the Making of International Law”\nHumanitarian disarmament is a people-centered approach to governing weapons that focuses on human\, rather than national\, security. It seeks to prevent future arms-inflicted harm and remediate that which has occurred. In her talk\, Bonnie Docherty will explain this groundbreaking approach to disarmament and discuss the process of creating new international law. Drawing on her 20 years in the field\, she will share first-hand experiences\, which range from documenting civilian casualities in Afghanistan and Iraq to negotiating international treaties banning cluster munitions and nuclear weapons. She will also address current challenges in humanitarian disarmament\, such as autonomous weapons systems (“killer robots”) and incendiary weapons. Finally\, Docherty will describe how her Harvard Law students and the Armed Conflict and Civilian Protection Initiative she directs have helped advance the humanitarian disarmament movement. \nOur first speaker is Bonnie Docherty\, Senior Researcher for Human Rights Watch\, Harvard Law School; Associate Director of Armed Conflict and Civilian Protection and a Lecturer on Law at the International Human Rights Clinic.
